I was a VP of Business Development in the commercial real estate industry, when being a single parent forced me into a bit of a mommy-track. During my 10 years home with my child I consulted, did public speaking, wrote books, was a journalist, and launched a tech startup. When my child reached 13 and I needed to get back to the corporate world, I was able to leverage all I learned about technology into a C-Suite position in my old industry.
Without going outside the industry to learn something new (technology), I never would have gotten an offer at C-Level.
