Business leaders in PENCIL’s network can deepen their impact by engaging in two core programs:

The PENCIL School Partnership Program

creates and supports partnerships between business and school leaders that leverage their collective energies to foster strong school leaders and prepare students for college and career success. PENCIL serves as a critical liaison in these partnerships, helping to recruit and match businesses with schools and providing hands-on support in the design, implementation, and evaluation of partnership activities.

The PENCIL Fellows Program

is a competitive career readiness program for NYC high school juniors and seniors. PENCIL trains and places talented, high need students in internships in businesses throughout the city in order to provide deserving students with critical workplace experiences and skills. PENCIL provides training to both students and business volunteers to make sure that students can get the most from their internships.

In 2013, PENCIL was named one of the “50 Best Nonprofits to Work For” in the nation by The Nonprofit Times and 2012 Nonprofit of the Year by the New York Enterprise Report. PENCIL has an annual budget of $4 million with offices located in Manhattan.

THE POSITION

Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President, Resource Development leads a six-person development team and works closely with the Board of Directors to grow and diversify PENCIL’s budget. This position requires a strong and effective leader with vision, energy and superb interpersonal skills.

Part of a four-person leadership team, the Vice President has three direct reports and is responsible for supervising the following positions:

Associate Director of Special Events and Sponsorships

Associate Director of Institutional Advancement

Associate Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations

Development Manager

Corporate Engagement Manager

Development Associate

Key duties and responsibilities include the following:

Implement fundraising strategies that increase and diversify the organization’s support from individuals, corporations, foundations and other sources, with a special emphasis on developing major donors;

Work effectively with the Board Development Chair and other Board members and key business volunteers, leveraging their talents, resources and ideas to enhance fundraising activities; understand the Board’s giving patterns; enhance board members’ ability to identify fundraising opportunities and encourage their ongoing participation as donors and solicitors;

Play a key, hands-on role in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual and institutional donors for annual and multi-year gifts;

Develop and maintain close working relationships with corporate partners;

Build partnering relationships with the organization’s leadership and staff; understand programs thoroughly, work collaboratively with program staff to integrate innovative development strategies throughout the organization; involve directors and managers in relationship building as appropriate;

Ensure that appropriate systems and procedures are in place to support the organization’s future fundraising goals; mentor, coach and develop professional growth opportunities for the development staff;

Develop and implement fundraising and donor cultivation events to steward relationships with existing funders and identify new donors, including PENCIL’s Annual Benefit;

Recruit business volunteers to engage in all aspects of PENCIL’s programmatic work;

Secure in-kind contributions (e.g., event space, catering, and other services) to support PENCIL’s programming and operations.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Our client is seeking a seasoned resource development professional with a track record of successful fundraising experience. Strong leadership skills and a commitment to coaching others to their highest potential are essential. Equivalent private sector experience in corporate social responsibility, philanthropy, public/private partnerships or other related disciplines coupled with nonprofit fund development work will also be considered.

In addition, s/he should have:

A record of measurable results in creating and implementing annual development plans inclusive of: individual gifts, corporate and foundation giving, and special events including the annual gala. Use of social media as an emerging development tool is important;

Proven experience and track record of success with major donor solicitation and the ability to close on major gifts and institutional support is essential;

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with and quickly gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including Board and staff members, individual donors, and corporate and foundation funders;

A track record as an effective communicator; highly developed skills in translating organizational goals and outcomes into compelling cases for support; the ability to communicate the organization’s mission and interests to individual donors and institutional funders including foundations and corporations;

A solid understanding of nonprofit fiscal management and fundraising best practices;

A working knowledge of how to utilize donor data to maximize fundraising and expertise in Moves Management, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or similar programs is required; Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud, DonorPerfect or other fundraising software is a plus;

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.

Familiar with the NYC public education landscape, as well as funders who support education and the education reform movement;

Comfortable with goal setting, quantifying results and accountability;

Straightforward and self-possessed; a team player who shares information readily, listens as well as gives advice and respects the abilities of others; a supportive member of the leadership team;

An exceptional relationship builder with high emotional intelligence; a team builder with strong management and leadership skills;

Committed to and enthusiastic about the organization’s mission and programs;

A catalyst with vision who can create excitement and energy around the organization’s programs and encourage others to support the organization; persuasive, persistent, and determined in the pursuit of PENCIL's fundraising goals;

Possessed of a strong work ethic and the recognition that development is not a 9-5 job; that evening and weekend work is sometimes required for success;

Self-motivated and detail oriented.
