ANY has ambitious goals to double the number of students served from 500 to over 1,000 by 2021 by launching new partner-based programs and strengthening and growing existing sites. In this growth phase, we are searching for a new Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a strong daily leader and oversee ANY’s existing operations and build the systems and team to support future growth.

The COO will drive operational excellence across the organization, with a focus on talent, programs, and growth. Key responsibilities include building a strong team, driving program growth and quality, and overseeing the efficient operations of the organization.

Working in close partnership with the CEO, the COO will strengthen an effective and scalable operational model for ANY, further developing the systems and processes required for growth and deeper impact nationally. This is an exceptional opportunity for a hands-on and systems-oriented leader to play a significant role in realizing ANY’s strategic plan and strengthening its culture.

The COO will inform the CEO, and ultimately the Governing Board, of all operations and program activities and accomplishments.

Responsibilities include:

Planning, Strategy & Growth

Collaborate with the CEO in driving vision and strategic planning, and serve as a thought partner

Translate strategy into operational plans and assess performance against goals on an ongoing basis

Launch new program sites (at least one new site per year) and recruit key program partners, including assisting in raising funds for new programs

In partnership with the senior staff, set annual national organizational priorities and program targets, and prepare ANY for its next strategic planning process

Establish strategic partnerships with relevant nonprofits, universities, colleges, corporations, and foundations

Collaborate with the CEO and CDO to work effectively with the Governing Board and serve as staff lead for relevant Board committees

People & Culture

Build a culture of high standards, focused execution, strong internal communications, and continuous learning

Develop long-term staffing model and ensure effective recruiting, training, and retaining of staff

Manage human resources, recruiting, staff professional development, and performance management

Coach leaders to inspire high-performing teams, address performance issues, and ensure a culture of excellence

Annually review with Finance & Administration Team (F&A) ANY’s benefits, HR processes, and vendors

Directly manage ANY’s program and operations team, as well as California Program Director

Operations & Systems

Drive operational excellence by standardizing processes and enhancing/establishing proper operational controls, procedures, and systems across all teams and functions

Collaborate with F&A to ensure ANY’s vendors, software, hardware and platforms support the organization’s growing needs

Collaborate with F&A to develop annual and multi-year budgets and ensure sound fiscal management

Work with General Counsel to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and business practices and review contracts, MOUs, and agreements

Audit and update organizational systems and policies regularly

Program & Evaluation

Create a data-driven culture with strong tracking systems and outcomes-orientation; champion data health and outcomes-driven decision making, as well as the rigorous use and full adoption of Salesforce

Oversee overall program design and implementation, and provide extra oversight and management for new programs

Work with sites to ensure ANY meets targets for recruitment, internships, and retention

Lead evaluation planning and activities, including when/if to work with an external evaluator, and champion program fidelity/quality

Oversee the creation and implementation of a national alumni strategy

Attend and contribute to Saturday professional development workshops and other program events

Additional projects and duties as determined by the CEO and Board.



Deep commitment to and familiarity with ANY’s mission

Minimum 10 years of experience in nonprofit program and operations, preferable including experience gained in a high-growth organization, with 8 years of supervisory experience

Experience in talent and performance management with a strong coaching skillset

Bachelor’s degree required, relevant advanced degree (MEd, MBA, MPA, etc.) preferred

Track record of growing an organization and launching new initiatives

Experience facilitating progressive organizational change and leading others to new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact

Ability to operate as an effective tactical as well as strategic thinker

Tech-savvy, with a record of adopting new technologies, systems and processes to drive quality and efficiency

Exceptional communication and relationship building skills, and the ability to effectively interface with senior management, Board members, staff and stakeholders

Impeccable attention to detail

Experience with program evaluation and data management, and can point to tangible examples of reporting and program measurement and evaluation.

Experience with fundraising and/or fee-for-service

Ability to work during Saturday workshops (1-2/month) and travel 25% percent of the time to provide on-site leadership for multistate programs
