Our tag line, Meet you at the Library, speaks to the essence of small-town character. Our concept for this library is rooted in connecting residents with one another by providing a welcoming and comfortable place that also provides access to tools and information and is a purveyor of programs for kids and adults of all ages. In that light we seek an impresario of community life in a town with a deep history of summer and winter activities that also attract visitors and second homeowners. Manchester and The Mountains is ground zero for outdoor recreation summer and winter and a population that engages in such while inviting others to join us. There is no old dust, real or imagined, at Manchester Community Library. It's not your grandfather's library. It's a hub of activity. There are sections for small, medium, and large kids and nobody walks around shushing them. It's light years from what we once thought a library to be. It's attractive, compelling, and business is booming. Opportunities abound, with a supportive Board that views our library is an enhancer of quality of life in a town with the best high school in America, that, by the way, is independent. And our elementary school is only a few hundred yards away. One doesn't need a library degree to be successful at this job but one does need the chops to manage an organization for greater success with more and more visitors through the door and broader financial support throughout the community. Position reports to: Board of Trustees Direct Reports : 14 Date of Approval: June 2018 Position Summary The Executive Director (ED) is the key management leader of the Manchester Community Library (Library). The ED leads a staff of 14 to fulfill the Library's mission as an inspiring gathering place for the community, providing opportunities and resources for personal enrichment and growth. The ED is responsible for overseeing the administration, programs, and strategic plan of the organization as well as fundraising and donor relations, marketing, building and grounds management and community outreach. The ED serves as the liaison to the town government, members of the community and supporters of the Library (past and future.) The position reports directly to the Board of Trustees. The ED supports the Trustees in developing the strategic vision and planning for the continued growth and success of the Library. The Manchester Community Library is a public library for the 21st century in a state of the art facility built just 3 1/2 years ago. We are committed to supporting and growing an organization that contributes substantially to Manchester and the surrounding towns. The ED will lead and manage a highly skilled and cohesive staff that provides great customer service, relevant collections for information, advanced technology resources, creativity in developing educational and cultural programming, and a welcoming space for people of all ages. General Responsibilities Organization Mission and Strategy: Works with staff and board to ensure that the mission is fulfilled though resources, programs, strategic planning and community outreach. Responsible for ensuring the relevance and integrity of the Library's resources - collections and technology. Responsible for directing the implementation of the Library's programs that carry out the organization's mission. Responsible for strategic planning execution to ensure that the Library can successfully fulfill its mission into the future. Responsible for the enhancement of the Library's image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations. Financial Performance and Viability: Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organization. Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Library, to include submission to the board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization. Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position. Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support the Library's mission, through management of and collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy. ( Note:
Public funds support only 30% of the Library's budget.) Board Governance: Works with board in order to fulfill the Library's mission. Responsible for leading the Library in a manner that supports and guides the organization's mission as defined by the Board of Trustees. Responsible for communicating effectively with the board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the board and its committees to function properly and to make informed decisions.
Organization Operations:
Oversees staff and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization enhance the mission. Responsible for the effective administration of Library operations. Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. Responsible for overseeing building and grounds management. Responsible for supporting and enhancing the efforts of the significant number of essential volunteers.

This list is not meant to be exhaustive. The position will include other responsibilities as the Board may determine and/or as circumstances require. Qualifications A Bachelor's degree. A Master of Library Science degree would be regarded favorably, but is not absolutely necessary. A record of progressively greater responsibility in organizations, with at least 5 years of experience managing staff is required. Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff. Transparent and high integrity leadership with proven leadership ability, initiative, vision and ability to build relationships with individuals, institutions and businesses. Solid, hands-on budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting. Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to non-profit sector. Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation. Demonstrated strong verbal and written communications skills. Comfortable speaking to individuals and groups. Working knowledge and use of Excel or other spreadsheet programs, word processing programs and other technology tools. Experience using and gathering information from a data management program desirable. Ability to convey a vision of the Library's strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors. Excellence in this Position Excellence in the Executive Director position will result in the continuing growth and evolution of the Library, with more members of the community participating in and taking full advantage of all the Library has to offer. Under the leadership of the ED, the staff and volunteers will be highly engaged in their work and making a significant contribution to the Library's impact in the community. That impact, combined with the collaboration between the ED and the Board of Trustees, will lead to increased enthusiasm for the Library and successful fundraising from individuals, businesses, foundations and the Town.
