The CAO has oversight for all academic activities including the two principle components: research and education, and participates in all strategic decisions and policy as a senior officer of MMC.# Working with senior leadership, the CAO provides strategic vision and oversight of the entire academic mission of MMC. It is expected that this vision and direction will include a system-level integration of MaineHealth beyond the medical center. The CAO reports to MMC#s Chief Executive Officer and is a member of the senior leadership team. As Academic Dean, the CAO also maintains a productive relationship with and is accountable to the dean at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM).# The two principal departments in the academic division are medical education and research. The Vice Presidents of each department directly reports to the CAO.# #Goals and objectives: The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for this position: # Prepare Health Professionals and Scientists for Purposeful Careers The education of health professionals and scientists continues to be the core mission. In the face of significant unmet health care needs and a continued shortage of health professionals, particularly in rural communities, MMC#s academic programs are critical to Maine#s health and health care future. Expanding the Maine Track program and the GME residency and fellowship programs and bringing more of the pre-clinical experience to Maine will further enhance the value of this signature program.# In addition, Continuous Professional Development (CPD), previously known as #Continuing Medical Education#, is an untapped opportunity.# This is a high potential opportunity for MMC and MaineHealth to better support clinicians, improve practice retention and improve health careoutcomes. #Align Vision of MMC and MaineHealth The unification of the MaineHealth system provides an opportunity to enhance collaboration in education and research, favorably impacting health care outcomes and population health. The new CAO will be expected to strengthen the academic alignment with Maine Medical Partners, independent medical practices and MMC service lines. Redefining #faculty# as an inter-professional concept will improve clinician engagement, workforce retention and clinical outcomes. Initiatives that move academics, research and teaching, into the community setting will assist local health care organizations to recruit and retain health professionals, improve patient care, assist in the redesign of local health care delivery and inform patients to better manage their health and health care. Address Societal Needs A fundamental shift in the educational programs and scientific work is needed to improve the health of patients within the communities that MMC serves. Learners still need to acquire direct patient care knowledge and skills and conduct research - but they also must build competencies in population health and health care improvement. Reshaping the programs to provide them with advanced skills in health care improvement while tapping into their ideas to improve health and health care should accelerate health care transformation in our communities. Collaborate Strategically for Greater Value MMC#s academic enterprise has developed productive relationships with regional and national collaborators. In Maine, the social determinants of health and epidemics like opiate addiction are at crisis levels, placing ever greater pressure on the health care system. The education and research programs can play an important role in ameliorating the burden of disease through novel relationships and sharing of expertise with community members. Ensure Accountability of our Academic Programs MMC#s education and research programs have experienced considerable growth and success in recent years providing value but also adding complexity.# The next CAO is expected to apply improvement principles to assess, sustain and enhance the academic missions to meet the challenging healthcare and funding environments. It is necessary to ensure that the mission, values and academic vision of MMC are well articulated and supported. Candidate Qualifications Education/Certification M.D., D.O., M.D./Ph.D or equivalent terminal degree. Ideally eligible for appointment at the rank of full professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.
