The Role & Function of the COO:
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides operational leadership to the organization, ensuring that the strategy and intended impact of the Y is achieved through its wide ranging programs, sites and experiences in a manner that is consistent with the mission, quality standards, culture, operating metrics and financial requirements of the Y of Central Maryland.
The COO requires the skills and competencies to: drive operational and experiential excellence throughout the organization; lead an organization that embraces change and is highly focused on the consistently high levels of satisfaction and achievement of its customers (i.e. members and program participants); improve, develop and/or upgrade family center Ys and youth development sites to achieve the organization's strategy; and develop an organizational structure, culture, and operational management system to support change, growth and measurable impact.
Success in the role will require sustained leadership skills, a well-rounded functional background, and superior management acumen.
Fiscal & Operational Responsibility
The COO must work with the CEO and CFO to ensure effective budget management and controls throughout the organization; meet annual and long-term revenue and operating margin goals related to membership and all program areas; review the organization's current financial position and sources of funds; improve measures to drive decision-making; strengthen financial controls and processes through clarity and simplicity; improve data for management decision-making; continuously improve the organization's operating performance through the use of operating metrics and management accountability; work with the CFO to prepare and manage the budget.
Operational Leadership & Associate Development
With primary operational leadership of a 3,100 person workforce and wide-ranging and diverse facilities and programs, the COO must adhere to the highest standards of leadership and management to ensure organizational effectiveness; continuously review the organization's talent and operational structure to ensure maximum effectiveness; develop a staffing model and talent recruitment initiative capable of supporting the organization's immediate needs and long-term strategy; build, manage, motivate and communicate with the operations leadership team; upgrade talent as required; create a culture of quality, mutual trust, associate empowerment and accountability; and be visible across the organization.
Work with the CEO, senior team members and the board to continuously build the Y's reputation and brand in the community; be visible at appropriate public events; contribute as a board member or advisor to other community organizations and commissions; maintain a personal and professional image befitting of the Y's values; advocate the Y's vision with clarity and passion throughout the community; work with the CEO to build strong, sustainable 3 relationships with: city, county, and corporate leaders, major donors and other key constituencies.
Governance & Philanthropy
Work with the CEO and the whole organization to develop and sustain volunteer engagement at both the association and community leadership board level; help Center Directors to initiate and manage effective recruitment and succession strategies to sustain local community leadership boards; provide senior associate support to the association board and its committees, as assigned by the CEO; work to help create a culture of sustained financial and volunteer support, and participate in efforts to raise funds for the Y's mission and cause.
Incorporates the Y's mission and four core values (caring, honest, respect and responsibility) into the organization's vision and strategies. Ensures community engagement; promotes the global nature of the Y. Leads a culture of volunteerism ensuring engagement, inclusion, and ownership. Leads a culture of philanthropy.
Advocates for and institutionalizes inclusion and diversity throughout the organization. Initiates the development of relationships with influential leaders to impact and strengthen the community. Is recognized as an inspirational community leader who navigates complex political and social circles with ease. Communicates to engage and inspire people within and outside the Y. Ensures that a talent management system is in place and executed effectively.

Must have managed a minimum of $30 million in operations.
Well-rounded, relevant functional experience and demonstrated success in the areas of: operations management, associate and leadership development; strategic planning; external/community relations; fiscal management; and capital project development and management.
A demonstrated track record of growing and managing complex and geographically diverse operations in the fields of health and wellness, early childhood development, and school-aged youth development; experience managing operations of scale that rely on both consumer and grant-funded revenue.
A track-record of outstanding people management, including the ability to: motivate and engage others, lead change; create a performance organization; hire and develop exceptional talent; make decisions; operate with the highest ethics and integrity; build trust and consensus; effectively delegate and empower.
Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
Strong professional or volunteer experience providing exceptionally high quality programs and services to most, if not all, of the following audiences/markets: children and youth, families, seniors and health seekers.
Experience successfully starting new business/programmatic ventures; negotiating third party partnerships and driving complex projects to a successful conclusion.
A demonstrated track record of community leadership, visibility, and credibility
Bachelor's degree (M.B.A. or advanced degree preferred, but not required).
